Products in Focus - Bone Broths

29th April 2023

I love making chicken or lamb bone broth. I love the process, the feeling of grounding and accomplishment I get at the end of a day of simmering and skimming and watching and babying my pot of broth. And I love poking it in its container after cooling it overnight in the fridge and watching it wobble when it sets because of all of its collagen-y goodness.

Bone broth makes a fantastic drink by itself, and is also a great base for stews, soups and more. But more than this, bone broth has nourishing and healing properties.

It has been used for centuries in many cultures across the world, such as traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,500 years, to support the immune system, aid digestion, and promote overall health; in Ancient Rome as a remedy for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues and joint pain; and in Native American culture as a powerful healing elixir that could help with digestion and overall health.

Bone broth is rich in nutrients and minerals, such as collagen, gelatin, glucosamine, chondroitin, calcium, and magnesium, all of which are important in many body systems, such as:

  • Joints - collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin are known to support joint health and reduce joint pain and inflammation;

  • Gut health - gelatin improves the integrity of the gut lining and reduces inflammation. It is now well established that a leaky gut (where the integrity of the gut lining has been compromised) contributes to the development of many diseases, including autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema, inflammatory bowel disease, allergies and asthma, and mood disorders;

  • Skin health - collagen improves skin elasticity and hydration; and

  • Immune system - amino acids support immune system function and reduce inflammation.

It is, however, time consuming, and I don’t love making beef bone broth - compared to chicken and lamb bone broths, beef is extra: extra smell, extra time and extra effort.

When I don’t have the time or energy to make my own broths, I use Best of the Bone broths. I have tried many ready-made broths over the years, and there are many formulations on the market. In the end, at the Hub we are stocking the broth that we have found the absolute best in results, flavour, product quality, and reliability.

Here are 10 things I love about Best of the Bone bone broths:

  1. It is a living food - a real, bioavailable broth, and not a denatured powder

  2. It is slow-cooked for 48-hours (who has time for that at home?!)

  3. It is made in Australia, by a small, family business

  4. The bones are from organic, grass-fed and grass-finished Australian and New Zealand cattle

  5. It is super concentrated, and super economical (26 serves per jar)

  6. It tastes amazing!

  7. It makes a great base for food, and you can choose your flavour depending on your dish - Green Leaf Curry, Italian Herbs and Garlic, or Turmeric and Ginger and more

  8. It tastes fantastic on its own (a bit like having a Cup-a-Soup but without all the bits we don’t want in there!)

  9. It keeps for a long time in the fridge

  10. I don’t have to make it!

Best of the Bone also make other great products, such as liver capsules, collagen powders, and Bone Buddies (bone broth for your dog or cat). Their products are all Halal certified.

My favourite flavour is Italian Herbs and Garlic. What’s yours?
